But when you get the videos back on their due date, the results are torture to sit through. They’re shot badly. Edited badly. And way, way too long. Which is bad for you because to grade them, you have to watch them first.
Why students need to learn video
It turns out that video, like writing, painting or getting your homework in on time, is an art. Students who are asked to create this art without any practice or instruction can be counted on to perform…um…unevenly.
Video is a language– and most of your students are illiterate. Sure, they've watched video since birth. They understand the language. They just don't speak it very well.
Teaching to the Rescue
We've put together the 5-Hour Video Boot Camp to make video assignments safe for the classroom again. It gives you five self-contained lessons to help students make videos that are more interesting, more watchable, and a lot shorter.
Students will learn the fundamentals of storytelling, shooting, and editing through practical exercises they can start using immediately. Teach one lesson or teach all five. Either way, your students will begin thinking like filmmakers instead of surveillance cameras.
Spend a couple of hours teaching students to shoot better video and their stuff will go from awful to halfway decent almost instantly. For students who discover that they really like shooting video, these foundational skills over time will take them from halfway decent to pretty great– all by themselves.
